This can be made with simple cardboard tubes like a toilet paper roll. This would show them all about the circle shape. Have them decorate it with many colors so that they also are introduced to the different colors. When they are done with their binoculars they can take them outside and see the world through their new binoculars. This helps them learn all about the sense of sight. So with one simple, inexpensive and easy project they are learning many different basic skills.
Another great education toy is in all the different varieties of blocks for sale. In this case you do not want to make a purchase when the child is too young; otherwise, the first thing s/he will want to do is put the block in his/her mouth. A block teaches a number of skills including dexterity, eye-hand coordination, logical thinking, and some great fun. If you think your child is too young then wait awhile, but, no matter what, a book is a great education toy. Not only can a book give you some quality time when your child wants you to read it, over and over, a book introduces your toddler to the life-long world of words. A book has been and always will be a treasure.
Some great ones are color by number pages, color by letter pages, draw by letters and numbers, printable bible quizzes, printable color shapes, and tons of more stuff that the internet now provides for moms who stay at home with their kids. Granted, your toddler is still going to need to be motivated physically. They may beg to go out in the snow, but with how cold it's getting, and especially if you have other babies, it may be hard for you to do.
Holidays make the perfect time to introduce new toddler crafts and new knowledge. As you make your Christmas gifts or decorations, add an activity or story reading time to help your little ones understand the meaning or Christmas. Having a fun activity planned in addition to the crafts makes for great family time and learning for the kids. So when your kids are making their stuffed paper bag turkey, have them tell you what they know of the Pilgrims and the "First Thanksgiving". Give them some history of your Thanksgiving growing up and what traditions your family had. Look for coloring pages, worksheets and other fun activities to keep them interested and the knowledge pouring in.
If you are unable to find black and white preschool worksheets that you like, you can still go for the colored ones; however, you may want to consider adjusting your printer settings. Instead of having them print off in colored ink, you may want to adjust your settings to gray scale. This will save you a considerable amount of money and printer ink, especially in the long run. Doing this can also create an additional activity for your child, as you can have them color all the pictures themselves.
Shapes are extremely important in basic and more advanced math. Most adults will immediately think of geometry, but shape patterns and spatial perception help your child to develop sequencing and logic skills that they will use later in their school career in subjects like calculus. We use shapes every day as adults, although we may not realize it. Think about rearranging the lounge furniture, cleaning out the kitchen cupboards or the refrigerator - all done according to the shape of the items in them, and how they will relate to each other. Road signs and markings make extensive use of different shapes, helping us to recognize them before we can actually read them.
