The original designs consisted of three to four small tables that could be stacked one upon the other. As time went on, designers also figured out that they could also be stored one under another, creating a piece of furniture that offered maximum space in a very small package.

A common use is as an end table, bedside table or side table, but their use is limited only to the imagination. A rectangular accent table may include a magazine rack underneath, with reading material contained within an arm's length of a nearby chair. Drawers may be included, where reading glasses, keys, phone books and such can be left safely until their next use is required.

No longer sold automatically in pairs with a coffee table, they have struck out on their own, joined by accent tables, occasional tables, drum tables, side tables... the list goes on and on and on.
