Of course everyone wants to be sure that the tables they purchase are perfect, but some retailers have a "scratch and dent" section of their store. This section includes items that may have been slightly damaged on the way from the factory to the store. In some cases, we may be talking about a very small scratch in an inconspicuous place. These small scratches can mean big savings when it comes to tables, and especially when dealing with solid wood tables, the scratches should not have any effect on the craftsmanship of the table. It may even be possible to refinish the table and get rid of that scratch.

For example, you can use a lovely accent table in lieu of a traditional nightstand, creating a different look that is still very functional. While you may forego drawers bedside, you can gain a nice table top with plenty of room for a lamp, book, reading glasses and other nighttime essentials. You can even add a crocheted or vintage lace doily on the top to add an extra homey touch. If you have enough room you can add another table on the other side of the bed, or perhaps place accent tables for any décor next to an overstuffed chair in the room so your guest has a place to get a little privacy. Add a floor lamp behind it and you have a quaint, comfortable getaway.

End tables should usually be the height of the sofa's arm and will act as a frame for the larger piece. If your sofa is a modern design, you may find the arm isn't much higher than a coffee table. Add a lamp and if possible have them wired so you can switch them on and off from a wall switch. If rewiring isn't possible, add a simple remote control. Over head lighting destroys the atmosphere in a room.

You have to find a common thread that ties all the tables together so they look like they belong. That's not to say they have to match, only that they complement one another. For example, you can choose new living room tables that are all different sizes, but share the same basic veneer pattern on the top, such as a sunburst or compass.
