Often people have a TV guide, pens, remote controls and other items that they set on end tables. All it takes is one incorrect motion of a hand and you're crawling behind the sofa looking for that pen or remote. Instead, look for end tables with lips. These have edges that curve up, so if you knock the items on the tabletop around, they will only roll to the edge and stop. This is much easier than going on the archeology dig that could be happening under the sofa.

Since it is still part of the room, it can't be so glaringly different that it distracts from the focal point of the room or create conflict in the eye of the beholder. Dining tables, dinette tables and coffee tables are all useful if you require more space to enjoy a meal, get work done, put your feet up, etc. But often times we don't need so much space, just a spot to store a drink, or a TV remote. Large tables are the kiss of death for small areas and apartment style living. They make spaces look smaller, and you've probably bumped your shin more than once trying to get around it. Maximize your counter space with bar seating and consider doing away with the full-sized table all together. Wooden side tables will really open up a room.

Another useful thing is that they work great as a complement to your current furniture, in addition to being fine on their own. This means that if you already have a table or dresser that you like, but you need a little more room, an attractive side table could be a good addition.

Designers use furniture and accessories to give people what they need, functionally, artistically and emotionally. Choosing the right table, and accenting with the right plants and flowers, are important parts of that process.

For instance, some end tables just don't scale well in a room, especially when you have a large sectional that dominates the landscape. Smaller accent tables can fill the bill perfectly, as you can get one that is thinner but no less useful.

One of the most common damages to end tables is from someone setting a cup down on the table without a coaster. The water from their cup will seep into the table and cause those white rings. Sometimes you can get them out, other times you may have to have the tables refinished to remove the damage. It's better to prevent it in the first place.
