If your sofa or other furnishings have a metal accent to them, say a strip of silver or brass along the front, you want to make sure that your tables have the same finish. The same is true if you're trying to match a coffee table you already have. For example, you may have a lovely coffee table with antique brass hardware. You'll want to use this as a springboard in your own decision-making, going with a similar finish for your end tables.

This allows you to add a little flair and flourish to your room by adding an accent table here or there that is in contrast to the other furnishings. An accent, if you will, to your other décor.

You have to find a common thread that ties all the tables together so they look like they belong. That's not to say they have to match, only that they complement one another. For example, you can choose new living room tables that are all different sizes, but share the same basic veneer pattern on the top, such as a sunburst or compass.

Some nightstands look like end tables, and some wicker cubes can also be great end tables if they have a lid. Just remember that the style of the piece is more important than what the piece was actually designed for. Make sure that any end table you choose is about the same size as the furniture you already have. Dainty tables do not work well with huge pieces of furniture, and modern furniture doesn't match very well with some antique tables.

Compared to end tables and coffee tables, they can be quite ornate, such as lovely wood tables with exotic, complex patterns of wood veneers. The can also come in any shape imaginable, from square and rectangle to round, oval and even octangular.

Often people have a TV guide, pens, remote controls and other items that they set on end tables. All it takes is one incorrect motion of a hand and you're crawling behind the sofa looking for that pen or remote. Instead, look for end tables with lips. These have edges that curve up, so if you knock the items on the tabletop around, they will only roll to the edge and stop. This is much easier than going on the archeology dig that could be happening under the sofa.
