When you're sitting down to a meal, when your child is doing homework, wooden side tables won't do. They're too small. But it's their small size that makes them such lifesavers for other things when you don't have room for something bigger. Ideally, you should use wooden side tables in conjunction with your other indoor or patio furniture as an accompaniment, or wingman, say, to your regular table.

Falling in love with a beautiful contemporary accent table does you no good if the rest of the furniture in your house is in a classical style. Just think about the style of the other furnishings in your home and try to find an accent table that falls in line with them.

Choosing a table isn't easy, partly because tables have so many names, yet the name rarely matters, what's important is the way the table is used. End tables are often found in pairs, one at either end of a sofa, but exactly the same table, on its own, at the side of a chair, would most likely be called a side table, you might even find it in the bedroom, as a nightstand. Whatever you call the table, it has a purpose, usually to act as a stage or platform for something else, a lamp, a cup, a book or all three. If space is at a premium, you may want to consider nesting tables or side tables where the top can be locked in an upright position so it sits flush against the wall. It can then be lowered and used while entertaining, but remain out of the way the rest of the time. Some side tables are also stackable, so you can create a multi-tiered shelf-like arrangement that can be used to display knickknacks most of the time but be pressed into service during a party or the holidays when every inch of table space is at a premium.

For example, in the living room you will want a sofa, chair, end tables, entertainment center and maybe a coffee table. Then your mind may wander to all the little things you need to put away somewhere in this room. You may think that means you need to add other items to your list, that are storage options for this room. But, why not allow the furniture you already have to do this job? Many end tables and coffee tables come with storage areas. By using this kind of end tables you can take that extra piece of furniture off the list, saving space and money.

You could add a touch of sweetness with a pie crust edged pedestal table or fill any spot with the versatile curves of a brightly colored garden stool. If those are too small for your space try a larger round entryway table for an end table and complement its shape with a round ottoman coffee table. Or take a tall pant stand and turn it into an end table; the possibilities are endless.
