Of course everyone wants to be sure that the tables they purchase are perfect, but some retailers have a "scratch and dent" section of their store. This section includes items that may have been slightly damaged on the way from the factory to the store. In some cases, we may be talking about a very small scratch in an inconspicuous place. These small scratches can mean big savings when it comes to tables, and especially when dealing with solid wood tables, the scratches should not have any effect on the craftsmanship of the table. It may even be possible to refinish the table and get rid of that scratch.

One of the first things every shopper should do before looking for an end table is measure the amount of space available. This is especially true in cases where you have a couch up against a wall in a space that fits rather tightly. There is no point in seriously considering any end table if it does not fit in the space you have, so be sure to measure carefully before you go shopping.

For example, if you have a Victorian setting in one room of your home you may want to choose a table that has beautiful roses painted on it or carved into it. Often people have a TV guide, pens, remote controls and other items that they set on end tables. All it takes is one incorrect motion of a hand and you're crawling behind the sofa looking for that pen or remote. Instead, look for end tables with lips. These have edges that curve up, so if you knock the items on the tabletop around, they will only roll to the edge and stop. In a small room, end tables can make the room more cohesive looking and less like pieces of furniture are piled up on one another. This is quite an impressive feat in smaller rooms. Often these spaces seem too overcrowded when you try to put complete furniture groupings in them, but since end tables can be small, and fit into spaces other pieces of furniture cannot, they can create that complete look without compromising precious floor space.

Dining tables, dinette tables and coffee tables are all useful if you require more space to enjoy a meal, get work done, put your feet up, etc. But often times we don't need so much space, just a spot to store a drink, or a TV remote. Large tables are the kiss of death for small areas and apartment style living. They make spaces look smaller, and you've probably bumped your shin more than once trying to get around it. Maximize your counter space with bar seating and consider doing away with the full-sized table all together. Wooden side tables will really open up a room.
