The key is to get tons of crayons, and sit with your kids while they color the shapes and talk to them about what it is that they are dong. Talk to them about the colors that they are using, how many sides each shape has, how do you spell the name of the shape, how you spell the name of the color that they are using, etc. The object of the activity is for you to really interact with your child for them to learn their shapes.
A timeless classic with toddlers is using water colors. Not only is this good in helping your kid identify colors, but what toddler doesn't enjoy playing with water? All you need for this activity is cups, food coloring, and some water. If your child is the messy type, it might be a good idea to take your water colors outside. Also, make sure that the cups you use are clear so your child is able to distinguish the colors.
Perhaps some flowers for a crafty idea for spring or summer. Or a snowman or sled for winter. You can even have them make a wreath with fall leafs or a scarecrow. All these ideas are a fun way for toddlers to understand the different seasons and the colors with each season. Calendars always make a fun craft at the beginning of each year. Your kids can mark important days, like their birthday, as well as the first day of each season. Have them decorate it with pictures and colors of each season. Don't forget to have them mark the holidays as well and plan for some holiday crafting time with your kids.
Preschoolers who are introduced to story books are more likely to have advanced literacy skills than their peers who were NOT introduced to such books. As a parent you should encourage further literacy development. Read a loud daily to your child. Choose different types of books and find the type your child is interested in. This will help build a child's vocabulary. Also, a child will understand that the letters in the book make words. These words make sentences, and these sentences create a story. When a child understands the beginning stages of Reading, it creates the cornerstone for all future reading.
Even if it is difficult to control a bunch of kids of such young age, taking the right efforts to get them involved in various school activities can raise their interests and avoid disruptions in the class. Make use of worksheets, while worksheets are less common in this age, you can have creative worksheets for the kids to help them develop their imagination and comprehensive skills. You can keep simple pages where the child is expected to match similar objects, draw images about a particular topic or even color the printed figure.
