It's amazing how a little thing like the material used to make a piece of furniture can change its entire character. This is certainly true with upholstered furnishings. The difference between a fabric sofa and one made of fine leather is like night and day. It's not that one is inferior to the other. Rather, it creates a different look to a room, all because a certain material was chosen.
If you've ever gone furniture shopping and come home more confused than ever before, don't feel like you're alone. Without even going into styles of furniture, figuring out the difference between one table and another can be a nightmare. Take lowly end tables, for instance. In the old days, end tables came in pairs, usually sold in a set with a matching coffee table. Easy enough. Put one end table on each end of the sofa, plug in a lamp on each and center the coffee table in front. 1950s basic décor.
The good news is that you can use whatever you like in your rooms these days. There's no need to be locked in the 1950s with the traditional end tables and coffee table set. Use your imagination and find ones that look wonderful in your home, no matter what others call them.
We have tables in our house that do Big Work. The kitchen table is where we eat two or three meals a day, tackle homework, and pay bills. The dining room table isn't called into service as often, but when it is, it's big-Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, and birthday and dinner parties. Even the coffee table, while it's smaller in stature, works sits front and center every day. It's the landing place for magazines and newspapers, laptops and DVDs, soda cans and pizza boxes.
Besides having ornamental appeal, end tables give you a platform to display mementos, knick-knacks or artwork. End tables also provide space for innovative lighting throughout your home. Place a lamp on an end table to give your home a softer, more intimate ambiance.
If you are looking for an economical choice for living room tables, you can choose from a selection of round, unfinished tables that you can dress up to fit your decor. Cover them with tablecloths, top them with a round piece of glass, and you've got places to put a lamp and a coffee mug, and some hidden storage space. They're versatile and inexpensive-a great choice for a student apartment, or when you are furnishing your first home. I've even seen new, plastic outdoor trash can--the round kind with a removable lid-put to use as end tables. Again, cover them with tablecloths and a glass top, and you've got inexpensive living room end tables with hidden storage-maybe for linens and pillows used on a sofa bed.
