Some accent tables have been crafted with a particular purpose in mind. Telephone tables were very popular during the reign of tabletop rotary dial telephones, and were designed to hold the telephone on the surface with a drawer underneath to hold the telephone directory. Entry tables were designated to stand stately next to the home's main entry door, often under a mirror where one might check her appearance before retrieving her car keys from the drawer of the table and leaving the house. Regardless, all of them can play double duty in your home.
That said, you can add a very different looking table to a foyer or entryway to create a welcoming environment. This can be used to hold a nice lamp, a candy dish or even a guestbook to give your home the ambience of a comfortable inn.
Accent tables are really exactly what you think they are. In contrast to end tables and coffee tables which often match, this table can contrast with the décor, creating a space in the room that really stands out.
Rectangular accent tables have many uses in the home. A common use is as an end table, bedside table or side table, but their use is limited only to the imagination. A rectangular accent table may include a magazine rack underneath, with reading material contained within an arm's length of a nearby chair. Drawers may be included, where reading glasses, keys, phone books and such can be left safely until their next use is required.
Since it's not always easy to tell what is and what isn't an accent table when shopping, it's a good idea to start your search online. In your favorite search engine enter "small accent tables" or "accent tables" and start looking through the results. This will help you see styles you like so you can narrow down your choices and do some comparison shopping. Keep in mind that the lowest price isn't necessarily the lowest price once you factor in taxes and shipping. Be sure that you factor all the costs in before you make your decision and go with a reputable retailer who will stand behind their product and make returns, if necessary, easy.
For example, an accent table can work wonderfully in an entryway, where you could use a place to keep your telephone books, your keys, gloves and other essentials that help you get on your way or find your way on a daily basis. They would look great with a small mirror above them, just so you can make sure you're all put together before you head out for the day.
