In some cases, you can purchase such tables to match your existing furniture, or if completely renewing your living room furniture they can be included in a collection. In the latter case your choice is simple, but what if not? What if you are looking for a coffee table or end table that is not part of a set, but you feel you need one or both to make your living room look complete? Here are some tips.
An end-table could also be a complimentary addition to your dining room, bedroom, entertainment room, entryway or foyer. If you require storage space as well as surface area you can avail of an end table that has drawers or cabinet space. You could also procure an end-table with shelves, if you need additional room to display keepsakes or artwork.
Keep in mind that you don't have to follow any conventions when selecting tables for your home. While traditional coffee tables and end tables are square or rectangular, there's no rule saying you can't pick a round or oval model, or even improvise and go with a totally non-traditional piece that will fill the bill nicely, such as a trunk or chest.
Here's a little tip in that regard. If you have wood accents on your upholstered pieces, you want to pick the same type of wood, stain or color for your coffee and end table sets. This will ensure that they look like a family of pieces, rather than having something stick out like a sore thumb because it's the wrong color.
Accent Tables: Accent tables are usually sold individually. They are a little splashier in appearance and are supposed to "accent" the décor in your room. As such, they come in many different shapes and finishes, including drum tables, drop leaf tables and tilt tops. They can be used in place of end tables, particularly if you just want a table on one side of the sofa or loveseat.
Coffee Tables and End Tables: Placement. The end table should be placed right up beside the arm of the chair. Not directly in contact, because any subsequent movement of then chair could easily shake the table and spill the contents of any container. Coffee tables should be placed 18" from the sofa, enough room to enable you to walk between the two items of furniture, but not so far as to place your cup out of each.
