The lines between what is and what isn't an end table has blurred in recent years. In fact, accent tables will now do very good service as end tables, adding a little more character to the room.
When decorating a small home or decorating on a budget, there is one key to keep in mind - multi-functional. The more functions one piece of furniture can serve the fewer pieces of furniture you will need (great for a smaller home) and the fewer pieces of furniture you will have to buy (great for those watching their budget).
Some prefer to have a table that has several drawers for storage; others prefer a single drawer with perhaps a small shelf along the bottom. It largely depends on the needs of your home. A single drawer table with long legs is visually lighter than an end table with drawers or a drawer and a lower shelf. The "visual weight" of a piece is important in keeping a room from looking too crowded.
Purchasing Sets. First try to purchase these tables in a set. Often sets come with two end tables and a coffee table, so make sure that you need a coffee table before following this route. Remember you will only save money if you actually need the other items in the set.
In fact, there are literally hundreds of designs to choose from when it comes to nesting tables, from the classic look of the 1930s to rustic designs, exotic models, eclectic designs and, of course, traditional, contemporary and even modern versions. There's literally a style to match every home, and that's not even counting the finishes or materials, whether it's wood, metal, marble, glass or a mix.
To help you sort it all out, here are some basics:
