Accent Tables: Accent tables are usually sold individually. They are a little splashier in appearance and are supposed to "accent" the décor in your room. As such, they come in many different shapes and finishes, including drum tables, drop leaf tables and tilt tops. They can be used in place of end tables, particularly if you just want a table on one side of the sofa or loveseat.
Besides having ornamental appeal, end tables give you a platform to display mementos, knick-knacks or artwork. End tables also provide space for innovative lighting throughout your home. Place a lamp on an end table to give your home a softer, more intimate ambiance.
Some people would say they could just pull out a folding table and use that as a space to put the drinks. Think back to the last time you really saw at a folding table. It may have been as a child at the 'kiddie table' during a holiday meal, or at some poker game with your college buddies. Do you really want that flimsy table to be holding up everyone's drinks. Consider a bump of the table during the game. How many colors will your carpet turn when the drinks start splashing over? You don't really want to think of what it will take to get red wine out, do you?
Shape is another consideration. When choosing the perfect end table many people prefer to go with a square or rectangle shape but a round or oval shape can go nicely at the end of a sofa or between two chairs as well. A round or oval table can also make the room look less blocky, giving it more character and definition.
Dimensions of Occasional Tables. It is open to debate which is the more important: the look and feel of your occasional tables or their dimensions. Perhaps dimensions are irrelevant if you find a superb coffee table that matches your furniture perfectly. Maybe that superb-looking end table is ideal for your sofa or armchairs. Forget their sizes - they look great so let's buy them!
Protect them From Scratches. End tables get more abuse than most other pieces of furniture in your home. They are always being banged around and beaten up by everyone who walks around your home. Think about all the times that someone has turned the corner beside your sofa a little too tight and ran right into the table? Between that and plates, purses and anything else they may be setting down on the end tables and picking up again, there are likely to be a lot of dings and scratches on your end tables if you don't protect them.
