Traditionally we don't think of end tables of adding much style to a room they usually have simple straight lines and are pretty plain. But you need to open your mind to really see the potential end tables have for making a statement in your living room.
The best way to do this is to offer protective surfaces for those things to touch. Many people use table runners to protect the top of the table. You also may want to put a larger lamp on the table to make people more cognizant that it's there as they walk by.
When selecting tables you'll find there's an endless selection, particularly online. Not constrained by available showroom space, these retailers have literally hundreds and hundreds of tables to choose from.
If you are a bit of a novice in selecting furnishings, this can be a real godsend. Usually all you have to do is pick a style (transitional, contemporary, modern, rustic, etc.) and then focus on the color of the wood or finish.
When thinking about shape, you also want to consider the style. For beginners, you're always safe going with a table that has straight legs and lines if the furniture around it also has straight lines. The same is true with a curved, leggy piece. It will tend to look better with more ornate furnishings.
The most common multi-functional pieces in the living room are end tables. There are so many varieties of end tables it is no surprise.
