Space. One of the first things every shopper should do before looking for an end table is measure the amount of space available. This is especially true in cases where you have a couch up against a wall in a space that fits rather tightly. There is no point in seriously considering any end table if it does not fit in the space you have, so be sure to measure carefully before you go shopping.
An end table is intended to make it easy for people sitting in an armchair to reach their drinks, nibbles or books and newspapers without having to bend down over the side of their chair to do so. The same with a coffee table - it should be set at a comfortable height. Your first priority should therefore be the dimensions of your coffee and end tables.
Beyond style and size, you really want to think about features. While you wouldn't ordinarily think about a piece of furniture as having desirable features, coffee and end table sets can have an endless array.
Coffee Tables and End Tables: Placement. The end table should be placed right up beside the arm of the chair. Not directly in contact, because any subsequent movement of then chair could easily shake the table and spill the contents of any container. Coffee tables should be placed 18" from the sofa, enough room to enable you to walk between the two items of furniture, but not so far as to place your cup out of each.
Purchase Closeout and Clearance Pieces. Another great way to save money on these tables is to look for tables that are no longer going to be manufactured. Retailers always put these tables on sale to get rid of them quickly, and they especially want to be rid of the tables if they need to make room for new models. Of course you may want the latest style of table, but just remember that tables do not actually change a whole lot from year to year. When a manufacturer stops making a particular model, it does not necessarily mean that the replacement model will be much different than the original. This is especially true of tables that have a very classic look to them. Odds are the manufacturer is simply changing the table lineup a bit.
Instead, take the road of strong tables that can pack away easily, nesting end tables. Not only are they sturdier, but can also be found in any style and to match any décor. That makes nesting end tables a nice addition to your home that you won't want to hide away after our guests leave.
