Even though they can often be an afterthought, don't forget about end tables when you go to decorate or redecorate a room. They can be the beginning of your journey into interior design. They may be the only ornament a room needs to complement the existing décor and make the look complete.
When you go room by room in your home, you will be able to quickly make a list of furniture essentials. For example, in the living room you will want a sofa, chair, end tables, entertainment center and maybe a coffee table. Then your mind may wander to all the little things you need to put away somewhere in this room. You may think that means you need to add other items to your list, that are storage options for this room. But, why not allow the furniture you already have to do this job? Many end tables and coffee tables come with storage areas. By using this kind of end tables you can take that extra piece of furniture off the list, saving space and money.
The same is certainly true of end tables. While wood tables have been traditional favorites in American homes for centuries, metal end tables will give your home an entirely different look.
Where wood tables add warmth, metal tables can either lend an air of sophistication or even a bit of energy to the room, depending on the type of metal you select and the design of the table itself.
That said, choosing the perfect end table is still and adventure, given the fact that you can choose one that not only complements your existing pieces of furniture and overall décor, but your personal interests and pursuits as well.
An end table is intended to make it easy for people sitting in an armchair to reach their drinks, nibbles or books and newspapers without having to bend down over the side of their chair to do so. The same with a coffee table - it should be set at a comfortable height. Your first priority should therefore be the dimensions of your coffee and end tables.
